The Tate Mansion is one of a handful of original homes remaining in the Indianapolis Mile Square still used as a home.  The front brick portion of the mansion is the addon from 1890 and the wooden two-story structure to the rear was built in the early 1840's. Tate Mansion has 13ft ceilings on the first floor, 12ft ceilings on the second floor and standard 8ft ceilings on the third floor.  The most all the woodwork is natural Hemlock with the main staircase made from oak and imported from Germany.  There are six slate fireplaces in the mansion that provided the heat for the home.  Some of the fireplace's slate are lithographed and are rare examples of ornate fireplaces from the Victorian period. The mansion is an example of Neo-Jacobean architecture a blend of German Romanesque and English Tuder.  The Tate Mansion is described in the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis as an early example of an early mansion.  There are twenty-five stained glass and leaded crystal windows, all original.
